We have audited hundreds of small-business websites, and the ones that quietly lose customers are almost always missing the same things. Here are the ten features that separate a website that works from a digital business card nobody reads — with the reason behind each.
Most of your visitors — often 70% or more — arrive on phones, and Google ranks your mobile version, not your desktop one. Mobile-first means designedforthe phone: readable text without zooming, thumb-sized buttons, menus that work one-handed. Test yours now: open your site on your phone and try to find your phone number in under five seconds.
Google's research puts it bluntly: over half of mobile visitors abandon pages that take more than three seconds. Speed is also a confirmed ranking factor. The usual culprits are uncompressed photos, bloated themes, and cheap overloaded hosting — all fixable. Aim for a Google PageSpeed score of 80+, ideally 90+.
Every page should answer: what do you want the visitor to do next? Call, WhatsApp, book, order — pick one primary action and make it impossible to miss. Websites that present six equal options convert worse than sites that present one clear one. "Get a Free Quote" beats a row of vague links every time.
In India, WhatsApp is where business conversations happen. A floating WhatsApp button with a pre-filled message removes every step between interest and enquiry. Phone numbers must be tap-to-call links — a number a mobile user has to memorize and retype is a lead lost.
Pre-fill your WhatsApp link with context: wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=Hi!%20I%20saw%20your%20website — you will know exactly which enquiries the site generated.
The padlock in the browser bar. Without it, Chrome literally labels your site "Not Secure" next to your business name — and Google demotes non-HTTPS sites. SSL certificates are free with decent hosting; there is no excuse for a business site without one in 2026.
Invisible but decisive: proper title tags on every page, one H1, meta descriptions, schema markup telling Google you are a local business, an XML sitemap, and clean URLs. Sites built without these can look beautiful and stay unfindable forever. Retrofitting costs more than building right — ask whoever quotes you exactly which of these are included.
For a local business: full name, address, and phone in the footer of every page; an embedded Google Map on the contact page; your real Google reviews displayed (genuine ones, linked to your profile); and photos of your actual premises and team — not stock photos of smiling models. Visitors decide in seconds whether a business feels real.
Short (name, phone, message — every extra field costs submissions), delivering instantly to your email or WhatsApp, with a confirmation so the visitor knows it sent. And test it monthly — the internet is full of contact forms that silently stopped working years ago, each one a stream of lost customers nobody noticed.
Google Analytics (free) plus Google Search Console (free) tell you how many people visit, what they searched to find you, which pages they read, and where they came from. Without them you are marketing blindfolded; with them, every future decision — content, ads, redesigns — is based on evidence.
Websites are not fire-and-forget: software updates, security patches, backups, and content freshness (a © 2023 footer in 2026 tells customers you have stopped caring). Whether it is amaintenance planor a disciplined internal habit, someone must own it — unmaintained WordPress sites are how small businesses get hacked.
Counting honestly, how many of the ten does your site have? If several are missing, our companion post oncommon website mistakescovers what each gap costs — and ourweb development servicebuilds all ten in from day one (₹8,000–₹18,000; full breakdown in theTrichy website cost guide).
In Trichy, a professionally built business website including all ten essentials typically runs ₹8,000–₹18,000 — see our full pricing guide for the breakdown.
Mobile-friendliness, without question. Most of your visitors are on phones, and Google ranks the mobile version of your site. Everything else builds on that.
If the foundation (mobile, speed, structure) is broken, a rebuild is usually cheaper than patching. If it is missing add-ons (analytics, WhatsApp button, schema), those retrofit easily.
The first seven, yes — they are structural. Analytics, review displays, and maintenance systems can be added in week one after launch. What you should not do is launch without mobile, speed, SSL, and clear contact paths.
Send us your website address — we will check it against all ten features and send you a simple scorecard showing exactly what is missing and what it is costing you.
